Guide #4
Best Café Rides from Stratford-upon-Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon is a brilliant place to start a café ride because you have a bit of everything close by: the Greenway, quiet south Warwickshire lanes, river villages, rolling roads towards Wellesbourne and Charlecote, and longer options out towards Kineton, Wootton Wawen and the edge of the Cotswolds.
For me, the best café rides from Stratford are not just about finding the nearest coffee stop. They are about choosing a direction that makes sense. If I want something easy and traffic-free, I head towards the Greenway and Milcote. If I want a proper road loop, I look towards Wellesbourne, Charlecote or Kineton. If I want a longer destination ride, I start thinking about Wootton Wawen or the lanes beyond.
These are the café rides from Stratford that make most sense to me.
Milcote
Milcote is probably the most obvious café ride from Stratford, especially if you want something relaxed, accessible and easy to follow. The Stratford Greenway makes it a very natural route, and it is one of the best options if you want a ride that avoids too much traffic.
I like Milcote because it works for lots of different riders. It is good for newer cyclists, gravel bikes, families, social rides, or anyone who just wants a steady spin with a café stop built in. You do not need to make the route complicated. You can ride out along the Greenway, stop at Milcote, and either return the same way or add lanes to turn it into a loop.
The only thing I would watch is the surface. In wet weather, parts of the Greenway can become muddy and waterlogged, particularly towards the end, and that can be awkward on a road bike with narrow tyres. In dry conditions it is usually straightforward, but after rain I would be happier on a gravel bike or wider tyres.
Best for: relaxed rides, traffic-free sections, newer riders, gravel bikes.
Direction from Stratford: west / south-west along the Stratford Greenway.
Bike choice: gravel bike ideal; road bike fine in dry weather if you take care.
Why I like it: it is the classic easy café ride from Stratford and gives the route a clear purpose.
Bobby’s
Bobby’s makes sense as a Stratford café stop because it is actually local to the town rather than something you are trying to force into a route from miles away. I would use it for a short ride, a social spin, or as the start or finish point for a loop.
This is the kind of stop that works when you do not want to over-plan the ride. You can head out from Stratford towards the Greenway, loop towards Clifford Chambers, Shottery, Wilmcote or the lanes south of town, then come back for coffee. It is also useful if the weather is uncertain or if you are riding with someone who wants a shorter, easier route.
For a café-ride website, this is an important sort of stop. Not every ride has to be a big countryside loop. Sometimes the best ride is a simple local one where the café is at the beginning or end.
Best for: short Stratford rides, easy loops, casual social spins.
Direction from Stratford: local town-based stop.
Bike choice: road bike or gravel bike.
Why I like it: it works naturally for shorter rides from Stratford without pretending it is a big destination ride.
The Garden Shed Café, Wellesbourne
The Garden Shed in Wellesbourne is one of the best options if I want a proper road ride from Stratford without making it too long. Wellesbourne sits naturally on routes heading north-east from Stratford, and you can link it with Charlecote, Hampton Lucy, Alveston or the lanes around the river.
This is a good ride when you want something more substantial than the Greenway but still very manageable. The roads around Wellesbourne and Charlecote can make a really nice café loop, especially if you avoid the busier sections and use the quieter lanes.
I would choose The Garden Shed for a weekend morning ride where the café sits around the middle of the route. It feels like a proper destination from Stratford, but it is not so far away that the ride becomes a big day out.
Best for: medium-length road rides, Wellesbourne loops, social café rides.
Direction from Stratford: north-east towards Charlecote and Wellesbourne.
Bike choice: road bike or gravel bike.
Why I like it: it gives you a proper café destination with plenty of good lanes to build around.
Gilks Garage Café
Gilks Garage Café is a good choice when I want a longer ride from Stratford into the south Warwickshire lanes. This is not the one I would pick for a quick spin, but it works well when you want a café stop with a bit more character and a route that feels like a proper ride.
From Stratford, I would think about heading out towards Kineton and the surrounding villages, using the quieter lanes rather than just taking the most direct road. The appeal here is the combination of rolling countryside and a café that feels like a destination rather than just a convenient stop.
This is a good option for stronger riders or small groups who want a bit more distance. It is still very much a café ride, but one where you have earned the stop.
Best for: longer road rides, south Warwickshire lanes, characterful café stops.
Direction from Stratford: east / south-east towards Kineton and surrounding lanes.
Bike choice: road bike.
Why I like it: it makes the ride feel like a proper outing and gives you a memorable stop.
The View, Wootton Wawen
The View is a good longer destination ride from Stratford if you want to head north-west towards Wootton Wawen and the Henley-in-Arden side. It is not the obvious short café ride, but it makes sense if you want to stretch the route.
From Stratford, this direction gives you a very different feel from the Wellesbourne or Greenway rides. You are heading towards canal country, quieter lanes and a café that feels like a proper target for the ride. It works particularly well if you want a scenic loop rather than a simple out-and-back.
I would save The View for a weekend ride where I had enough time to enjoy the route properly. It is less of a quick coffee stop and more of a destination.
Best for: longer destination rides, scenic loops, small groups.
Direction from Stratford: north-west towards Wootton Wawen and Henley-in-Arden.
Bike choice: road bike or gravel bike depending on the route.
Why I like it: it gives you a different direction from Stratford and makes the café feel like the point of the ride.
The Cowshed
The Cowshed is one I would use for a countryside café ride rather than a short Stratford spin. It works best if you are planning a longer loop and want a rural stop with a more relaxed feel.
From Stratford, I would only include this if the route naturally heads that way. It is not the first café I would suggest for a quick local ride, but it can make sense as part of a wider south Warwickshire loop, especially if the aim is a sociable ride rather than a fast training session.
This is the kind of stop that suits a group ride where the café is a proper pause, not just a rushed coffee before heading straight back out.
Best for: relaxed countryside loops, social rides, longer café rides.
Direction from Stratford: depends on the loop, better for longer routes than short local rides.
Bike choice: road bike or gravel bike.
Why I like it: it has the right feel for a sociable countryside café stop when the route fits.
How I would choose between them
If I wanted the easiest and most Stratford-specific café ride, I would choose Milcote. The Greenway makes it simple, accessible and traffic-light.
If I wanted a short local spin, I would use Bobby’s either before or after the ride.
If I wanted a proper medium-length road loop, I would head for The Garden Shed in Wellesbourne.
If I wanted a longer ride with more south Warwickshire lanes, I would look at Gilks Garage Café.
If I wanted a longer destination ride in a different direction, I would choose The View at Wootton Wawen.
